    United Airlines launched service Friday to Denver, a route sought for nearly a decade by Sonoma County residents, tourists and business travelers desiring flights to a major international hub with convenient connections to destinations across the country and around the world.

    Michellene Ruiz and Faith Ndegwa have their sights set on achieving greatness. They enroll in advanced classes each summer, and during the school year are involved with clubs at their school, Roseland Collegiate Prep, that emphasize leadership and good study habits.

    So it was no surprise to their parents when they chose to spend Saturday — a precious day off in their packed weekly schedule — at an engineering event for young women.

    Ruiz and Ndegwa, both 15, were among about 120 students attending the Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day hosted by Keysight Technologies in Santa Rosa.

    Fans of chef Matt Elias’ and Laine Ayre’s The Bodega food truck will be stoked to learn they’re now heading up one of the coast’s most destination-worthy cafes — Dillon Beach Coastal Kitchen.

    Further south, Tony’s Seafood in Marshall is getting ready for their grand opening later this month. The 70 year-old restaurant is being resurrected by Hog Island Oyster owners John Finger and Terry Sawyer, who purchased it in 2017.

    To help better compete in the U.S. wine marketplace, the county winegrowers’ trade group on Thursday unveiled a new app that will allow users to scan the label of certain locally produced wines to learn more about the product. The app will open a video and additional text explaining how the grapes were grown and more information about the winery that produced the wine.

    "Chef and owners Zacarias Martin and Dionicia Valdovinos are serving up authentic Mexican food with influences from Guadalajara and Michoacán," the network wrote on its site. "The food incorporates chilis and spices, like cloves, and many of their dishes make use of the use of the molcajete, the traditional Mexican mortar and pestle."

    The Sonoma County Economic Development Board (EDB) is applauding Taqueria Molcajetes' success. 

    The board worked with the restaurant owners and helped them secure a $40,000 loan from the Sonoma County Impact Loan Fund.

    The airport reached an all-time high in passenger traffic for 2018, with a total of 440,644 passengers served. That’s a 10.8 percent increase over 2017’s final count of 397,787 passengers.

    “We achieved this new annual record due to increased passenger service by Alaska, American and United,” said Jon Stout, airport manager. The bulk of the increase came from Alaska, which increased flights 6 percent over 2017, he said.
